The CNET Operations Engineering team manages, monitors, and maintains the CNET site and web service hardware infrastructure and production environment. The team also performs software installation and configuration changes, develops basic systems management scripts and automation, and manages other projects related to the deployed platform. The efficient, stable and fast operation of our mission-critical large-scale infrastructure is crucial to our business. CNET Engineering has an immediate opening for a strong, driven manager for its San Francisco, CA Operations team.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of distributed computing concepts and solid knowledge of networking and UNIX systems management. He/she will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to interact effectively and professionally with direct reports, internal customers and engineers throughout the world. The ability to rapidly assess, analyze and resolve complicated issues with little initial information or direction and with varying degrees of ambiguity is required.

 Responsibilities:

Align engineering development requirements with the capabilities of the site infrastructure

Establish and evolve the administrative protocols that Technical Operations and Software Engineering use throughout the service life-cycle

Participate with engineering leadership in the design of architectures and automation that deliver against strict requirements for functionality, scalability, performance and reliability

Quickly gain proficiency in understanding how each software component, system design, and configuration is linked together to form an end-to-end solution

Manage a team of Operations Engineer, providing support for prioritization, standards development and evangelization, production troubleshooting, and mentorship

Serve in an on-call rotation as an escalation contact for service trouble incidents.

Directly contribute as an operations engineer when necessary

• Build strong working relationships with coworkers, direct reports (if applicable), customers (internal and external), and company management

• Provide leadership and mentoring to employees in your reporting chain utilizing best practices as a people manager and organizational leader

Qualifications

BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline, or equivalent training and experience

5 years administering Linux systems in a production environment

Proven ability to quickly learn and implement unfamiliar technologies

Configuration and maintenance of common applications such as Apache, memcached, Squid, MySQL, Tomcat, Resin

Track record of building and shipping robust, massive scale server deployments

Proven ability to handle multiple projects in parallel while prioritizing according to the overall roadmap

Exceptional cross-functional communicator who can lead and contribute to technical and business discussions

Experience working with load balancing technologies and large-scale web server farms

Excellent mentor/coach and skilled at career development for operations engineers and leads

A strong background in internet service deployment, provisioning, IP networking, service infrastructure, or software deployments

Excellent organization skills, project tracking abilities, communications skills

Detail oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills

Must successfully pass a background check
