The Research Software Development Engineer will have that unique blend of Mathematics, Machine learning, Data mining academic background of a Researcher but is also a skilled programmer that can take his research and produce production quality code- not just prototypes. This is a unique opportunity for a Researcher that enjoys staying current with "hands-on" development by coding and working with the latest technologies and seeing the end result in the hands of everyday people. BS/Masters degree in Math, Statistics or Computer Science is preferred. Your primary focus is on improving a current recommendations system but you will also have a chance to Implement Hadoop/Hbase into our present platform.
You will be part of an elite team helping improve the quality of the recommendation engine used in our web applications. This will involve research, analysis and implementation of algorithms and data elicitation methods that improve recommendation relevance as user feedback occurs. Your data source will be the preference and markup data from over 20M websites from over 8 million web users worldwide, these are the collective records of billions of detailed usage records that you will analyze and use to make practical improvements on our engine. You should be motivated by such a challenge to dig through such data and use it as the basis to create and implement meaningful algorithms that optimize our systems performance and accuracy.
Responsibilities:
* Research and implement changes to improve recommender quality
* Help invent new heuristics and algorithms for information distribution and content discovery
* Use statistical methods and machine learning to characterize user preference
* Investigate data mining and concept extraction strategies using classification and clustering
* Create visualizations for complex datasets
* Explore new data collection methods, both explicit and implicit
Qualifications:
* MSc or Phd in Computer Science or related field
* 3+ yrs of applied research experience related to recommender systems, computational linguistics, data analysis, statistical learning methods, or search.
* Experience with basic statistical methods such as modeling multi-variate distributions, hypothesis testing, bayesian inference, simulation modeling, time series analysis
* Experience working with large data sets (100GB+)
* Knowledge of text classification and clustering
* Knowledge of unsupervised learning methods a bonus
* Experience with distributed computation a bonus
* SQL experience required
* PHP, C++ experience strongly desired
* Strong coding skills and ability to pick up new languages a must.
* Strong people skills to work with other engineers
* Strong work ethic, diligent and reliable
* Proactive problem solving skills
* Superb verbal and written communication skills
* Outside projects or contributions a plus.
