As a Senior DBA in the Technical Operations organization, the ideal candidate will become part of the team responsible for the complete lifecycle of the management of Oracle databases for the Salesforce.com on-demand service. This includes, but is not limited to: database and storage planning, database implementation, maintenance coordination, ongoing configuration, and management of all Database hosts and instances within the salesforce.com data centers.
Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities for the Senior DBA position include:
- identification and resolution of hardware, software, or database problems/malfunctions in any of the salesforce.com database instances and/or hosts, especially those that directly impact the production salesforce.com service
- analyzing systems errors or anomalies, as well as specific database performance issues and/or error messages, in order to ensure maximum uptime and service quality and assess trends that may ultimately result in degradation of service
- working internally withing the larger Technical Operations organization to test planned databases upgrades / modifications, as well as provide input into long-range database requirements and operational guidelines, with a focus on improving the performance and reliability of the databases and the salesforce.com service overall
- formulating and implementing monitoring, policies, procedures and standards relating to database management.
- working with our Professional Services organization to resolve API/database issues, including the troubleshooting of 3rd party data integration services and/or other Web-enabled solutions.
- participation in a 24x7 on-call rotation on a periodic basis; this requires functional knowledge of all salesforce.com production systems and subsystems outside of the database layer in order to provide on-call support.
- some travel may be required
Required Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience
- 10G (9i), ASM
- 6-8 years database administration experience, with at least 3 years in a 24/7/365 environment
- strong UNIX administration skills - Solaris and Linux experience required
- experience with high availability database solutions and architectures such as Oracle 9i RAC, SunCluster, Veritas DBE/AC, Oracle DataGuard, and so forth
- strong knowledge of Veritas Volume Manager
- experience with high-end SAN storage (HDS, EMC, Brocade, etc.) solutions, particularly in the area of multi-pathing (MPxIO, DMP)
- experience with RMAN (Recovery Manager) and one of the major backup packages (Legato NetWorker, Veritas NetBackup, etc.)
- experience in executing an Oracle database restore from tape.
- experience with database disaster recovery methodologies
- excellent SQL and PL/SQL skills
- candidate MUST have extensive experience working within structured change management processes for highly available enterprise database systems
- experience with Enterprise monitoring and management frameworks (i.e. HP OpenView, Micromuse NetCool, etc.)
- networking experience (TCP/IP, Database Connectivity (JDBC, ODBC, etc.)) in Java to database connectivity environments required
- excellent oral and written communication skills
- strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, conducive to team development
- Perl and shell scripting
Desired Skills:
- Experience with Oracle streams, 11g, Infiniband
- experience in terabyte-sized OLTP environment preferred
- experience with storage-specific replication technologies (HDS ShadowImage, TrueCopy, TimeFinder) preferred
- experience supporting and configuring major Internet host/network services including but not limited to: Web (http,SSL, etc.), Mail (IMAP, sendmail,etc.), DNS, NFS, NIS/NIS+, and Java considered a plus
- Oracle applications and performance tuning experience considered a plus
- prior experience in a Java-driven environment, or in Java programming, considered a plus
- prior experience managing e-commerce and/or on-demand services considered a plus
- Experience working in secure enterprise database environments
- Oracle database administration certifications will be accorded appropriate weight in the candidate evaluation process, in the context of prior employment experience and database environments
