As a Web Technologist at AOL Search you will be tasked with forging together new web technologies with design aesthetics and user interface learnings to produce engaging web-based experiences and functional back-end applications.
 
Your daily challenges as a Web Technologist will lean on your creativity and problem-solving abilities as you collaborate closely with UI Designers, Product and Project Managers, System Admininstrators, and fellow Web Technologists to develop, support, and maintain new and existing products and platforms within AOL Search. You will need a strong command of essential web technologies such as XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, DOM Scripting, XML/XSLT, RSS, PHP, JSP, Java, Struts, Spring, and popular script libraries such as Prototype and jQuery.  Active collaboration will occupy about a quarter of your time leaving you plenty of time to plan and code to the best of your ability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Collaborate with design, user interface, optimization, accessibility and usability teams to refine the consumer experience.
- Partner with software engineers and system administrators to ensure the best functionality and interactivity.
- Develop clean, concise, optimized, cross-platform/browser user interfaces through CSS, XHTML, JavaScript, Ajax, and XSL.
- Dedication to the engagement and experience of AOL Search users.
- Monitor platform performance with reporting, load-testing, and metric analysis.
- Act as a technical liason for AOL Search by communicating technical concepts to non-technical people.
- Manage and optimize feed consumption methods using existing AOL platforms.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position demands a passion for technology, strong technical experiences and skills in design, development, deployment, and experience with a variety of web services.

- 5+ years related experience.
- Extensive experience with XHTML/HTML, CSS, JavaScript, DOM scripting, Ajax, JSON.
- A strong background in cross-browser cross-platform development.
- Processing XML with XSLT/XPATH.
- A commitment to web standards and working knowledge of W3C methods and properties.
- Excellent coding proficiency. Ability to write clean, concise, and commented code.
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
- Advocate of graceful degradation, unobtrusive scripting, and progressive enhancement.

 
PREFERRED

- JSP or commensurate skills in another middleware language (PHP etc.)
- Knowledge of SEO best practices and techniques.
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop.
- Java and/or other Object Oriented Distributed Languages.
- Database management, SQL / MySQL.
- CVS, Subversion, version control and management.
- Working knowledge of Flash / ActionScript.
- Experience developing in a Xnix environment.
- Experience developing web services and internet "mashup" applications.
- A commitment to serving all users by providing products exceptionally optimized for usability and accessibility.
- A passion for open source ideals and the web community as a whole.
- Awareness of best practices, trends, and emerging technologies.
- Willingness to attend or present at internal / external classes, training, brown bags, conferences, and non-conferences.
- Experience with AOL open source initiatives at dev.aol.com.
- Familiarity with AOL products such as TMZ, Asylum, MapQuest, etc.
- Ability to work in multi-national environment.  We work with teams in Bangalore and Dublin.
- Comfortable with majority of interaction happening over instant messenger and e-mail.
